Keep the maths in perspective
Expected value, implied probability and potential return are models. They depend on assumptions and cannot guarantee a result. A mathematically positive estimate can still lose, and an inaccurate probability estimate can make a negative bet appear attractive.
Set boundaries before betting
- Decide a money limit that will not affect essential spending.
- Set a time limit and take regular breaks.
- Never chase a loss by increasing the next stake.
- Do not gamble while distressed, impaired or under pressure.
- Keep records and judge decisions over time, not by one result.
Warning signs
Consider stopping and seeking support if gambling is becoming secretive, causing financial pressure, affecting sleep or relationships, or feeling difficult to control.
